Prevalence
4. Prevalence
Have you ever wondered how many people have gone through similar experiences to Helena? Could you have a guess?
While studies have reported differing prevalence rates, there is substantial empirical evidence that ONE IN FIVE children in Europe experience some type of sexual victimisation before they are 18 years old.
How can it be so prevalent? Sexual abuse is a hidden phenomenon.
Click on each layer of the iceberg to find out why reported prevalence rates vary.
Remember that we are referring to a type of violence that affects a substantial proportion of children and young people. It is also important to note that all studies show that both boys and girls experience child sexual abuse and that it occurs in children of different social and cultural backgrounds, whilst children with disabilities are also at considerable risk of experiencing sexual abuse.
How many of your students would that be?
